In 2023, 11,649 children were reported killed or maimed, 8,655 were recruited or used in conflicts, 4,356 were abducted, and 1,470 were victims of sexual violence. Additionally, there were 5,205 instances of denied humanitarian access and 1,650 attacks on schools and hospitals.

Previously, the Graça Machel report highlighted the devastating effects of armed conflict on children, leading to the adoption of the 51/77 Resolution on the Rights of the Child in 1997 by the General Assembly, marking a significant step in protecting children in conflict zones.

Children are disproportionately affected by armed conflicts. The use of explosive devices and remnants of war leads to the death and injury of many children.
